How does Acupuncture work?

Acupuncture helps regulate and balance the body’s vital life force energy called Qi. This energy flows along an interconnected meridian system throughout the body. If Qi in a meridian is blocked the body becomes imbalanced. Acupuncture helps remove blockages so that the natural flow of Qi is restored to the part of the body affected by the blockage. In this way, natural harmony and balance can occur.

What does Acupuncture feel like?

Acupuncture causes a variety of sensations, some of which may feel foreign and unique. Patients often describe feeling heavy, achy pressure, or a spreading, traveling sensation after the needles have been placed. If I release any active trigger points, which are constricted bands of muscle that cause pain, you will experience a muscle twitch response as the muscle hyper-contracts then relaxes. After stimulation of a trigger point, the muscles tend to immediately feel looser, with a reduction in pain and stiffness.

Your first visit & treatments:

During the initial visit, you will fill out a detailed intake, providing me with the necessary information to assess your overall condition and current state of health. We will discuss your past medical history, as well as any therapies you have undergone or are currently receiving. In addition, we will discuss how better to achieve your health goals. This information will allow me to determine a treatment plan in which I will choose various points on your body to stimulate with acupuncture needles. For those who are needle sensitive, a variety of non-needling techniques can be used as well.
